Punks are notoriously “anti-“, especially when it comes to holidays centered around what many perceive as greedy, narcissistic capitalism. Some, on the other hand, just like to make traditional holiday hits a bit heavier. So in the spirit of giving, here’s a playlist of ten tracks to make your Xmas a bit less merry and a bit more merciless.
“Santapocalypse” – From First To Last
From First To Last’s brand new Christmas single is first on our list of un-merry jingles to get you through the day. From lines like “Cocaine in my gingerbread” to a new spin on Disturbed’s “Down With The Sickness” at the 2-minute mark, “Santapocalypse” is a brutal way to begin your celebrating.
“Santa’s Pissed” – Motionless In White
Pretty much everyone in the metalcore scene has been jamming this one for years. It’s safe to say that this is the most X-rated Xmas song you’ll hear all day.
“Deck The Halls” – Sirens & Sailors
This one is a more straightforward cover of an old classic, but there’s nothing like hearing “‘Tis the season to be jolly” screamed at you in the most ironically devastating way possible.
“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” – I, The Breather
This one from I, The Breather is one of the two purely instrumental covers on our playlist. Let the shredding begin.
“Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy” – August Burns Red
The only way to celebrate a metal Christmas correctly is with August Burns Red. From their 2012 Christmas album, Sleddin’ Hill, “Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy” is the probably the most epic representation of the daintiest song title known to man.
“Making Christmas” – Rise Against
No rocker’s Christmas playlist is complete without at least one song from the 2008 compilation album, Nightmare Revisited. Our pick to keep you going is Rise Against’s punked up version of “Making Christmas.”
“This Christmas (I’ll Burn It To The Ground)” – Set It Off
We’ll lighten it up a bit but still keep it creepy with this original Set It Off single from Fearless Records’ Punk Goes Christmas 2013. We won’t be the ones putting worms in your stockings or knocking your tree over, but if you’re like Cody Carson and you’re sitting “conniving through the cheer and laughter,” we won’t blame you.
“Xmas Has Been X’ed” – NOFX
Here’s the fuck-the-establishment-and-your-religion-too song you’ve been looking for. Need we say more?
“Won’t Be Home For Christmas” – Blink 182
The pop punk kings in Blink 182 are here to make our wild Christmas playlist a little more bouncy. Embrace it.
“12 Days of Christmas” – Taking Back Sunday
This one is a throwback that’s purely for laughs. Yeah, it’s eight minutes long, but it’ll give you the Christmas cheer that maybe your family won’t. Plus, there’s a Slipknot joke thrown in there. Who doesn’t love that?
