Sharptooth Vocalist Lauren Kashan On The Fem Voices Hardcore Needs

It’s rare to come across such a tough, charismatic woman fronting an incredibly heavy hardcore band. While Baltimore band Sharptooth and their vocalist Lauren Kashan are a wonderfully unique find, we have to stop and consider why that is. Sharptooth are almost entirely melody-free, bearing similarities to bands like Every Time I Die and Stray From The Path, and for some reason that comes as a surprise. When people hear “female-fronted band,” they often immediately think of Paramore or even one of the many metal bands out there that are led by chicks. But in hardcore, there is a strange absence of fem that Kashan wants filled.

Fit For A King Vocalist Ryan Kirby Talks Heaviest Album Yet, ‘Deathgrip’

The 2015 terrorist attacks on Paris affected not just the iconic French city but the globe, and not just the the ever-turbulent political sphere but the music industry as well. Since acts of terror have become an unfortunately common occurrence in our modern world, we’ve heightened security at large, international events like the Olympics and international hubs of transport such as airports. However, the tragedy that occurred at a concert at the Bataclan was tragic for more than the obvious reason. For many in the music community, like Fit For A King, it was traumatic because it attacked what is supposed to be a safe haven away from all of the horror of the world.

INTERVIEW: Gatherers at The Overspray

One more thing about the Not So Summer Slam Festival that we still need to tell you: The entire day was riddled with technical difficulties. From blown out speakers to failing microphones to screeching feedback, it’s probably safe to say no one made it through the day without some kind of issue. But that’s what makes it DIY, right? Punks ain’t supposed to give a shit anyway.
