If you’re like us, you were introduced to Indiana’s Church Tongue when a video of the band setting their guitarist (Chris Sawicki) on fire went viral last year. The act was one of the most insane displays of punk we’ve ever seen, and now the band are here to deliver a new record to shake the hardcore scene. Church Tongue guitarist Nicko Calderon took some time to talk to us about the upcoming record, Heart Failure, and why they started setting people on fire in the first place.
“Expect the unexpected” is probably one of the worst, most clichéd pieces of advice. Still, despite having heard it far too much, we didn’t expect the least gory answer to the question “So how would you commit a murder?” to come from the guitarist of a band that literally has the word “murder” in its name.
From the moment our video interview with Andy Marsh of Thy Art Is Murder kicks off, it’s clear this guy does not take himself too seriously, and it’s pretty funny. Because how else do you sit through an interview? With a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other, of course.
Check out the video interview below and give a listen to the band’s new record, Holy War.
While we at HXC Magazine pride ourselves on writing editorial content that makes you think, we do like to goof off every now and then. That’s what our ‘Shit Hardcore Kids Say’ section is for; those pieces of the scene that make us laugh (at ourselves) and those random corners of the internet that you like to share with your friends. Apparently, Escape The Fate love goofing off, too.
Anyone who follows ETF vocalist Craig Mabbitt and guitarist TJ Bell on Instagram is aware that these two never fully grew up, and you’ve got to love them for it. It seems they’ve been getting really into the Dubsmash App lately, which allows you to sample soundbites from your favorite songs, movies, shows, etc. and make videos with them. Who knows how much work these guys are getting done on the new album–which they’re recording right now–but they’re definitely adding bullet points to their comedy resumes.
Catch these fools and the rest of Escape The Fate on Warped Tour this summer!
Being that HXC is a DIY magazine, there’s nothing we love more than DIY-touring. Well, except when a guitarist is intentionally set on fire mid-set. We may love that more.
Beartooth’s string of DIY midwest and southern tour dates began with a blaze last night in Indiana, where Church Tongue lit their guitarist, Chris Sawicki, aflame during one of their songs. Whoever says punk is dead clearly just can’t stand the heat, because this is punk-fucking-rock.
