Patent Pending’s cover mashup, “Wasted/Wake Me Up,” is one to add to your summer jams playlist. It’s not heavy, but it sure is fun to listen to and to watch. Both the title and the cover artwork of The Acacia Strain‘s new record Gravebloom tell a tale of destruction and rebirth. For vocalist Vincent Bennett, the journey that the iconic phoenix represents has been an extremely personal and turbulent one.
It’s been 15 years since the inception of Misery Signals, a cornerstone band in the hardcore scene, and only now is their full story being told. The band, who have been a major influence on many contemporary hardcore projects, have just released an emotional documentary entitled Yesterday Was Everything, directed by Matthew Mixon. Guitarist Ryan Morgan fills us in on what the film means to him and the effect it has had on his relationship with his bandmates.
Born Of Osiris, Betraying The Martyrs and Volumes hit Gramercy Theatre in NYC on June 25th as part of The New Reign Tour Part II. Where We Are Now, The Sun Sets Here for Vanna
For over a decade, Boston’s Vanna have been creating aggressive music for us to sing along and swing our fists to. Vanna has helped me get through some tough times and made others great. They will remain a part of my life through their music that I will continue to listen to even after they’ve closed the curtains.
The Acacia Strain are sixteen year veterans of the aggressive music scene and their latest product, Gravebloom, shows they know what they’re doing, but also that they’re not afraid of experimenting. Hailing from a small, old, western Massachusetts town that would have inspired H.P. Lovecraft, the band excel at making brutal music with a dreary overtone. Basically, they create the aural equivalent of a winter night in a foggy, empty New England town – harsh and unforgiving.
Gravebloom is slow, sludgy, and depressing and tends to blend together at times. Then it changes to a frenetic pummeling assault without warning. The title track maintains a faster pace than “Model Citizen” or “Worthless,” which are good representations of the record overall, and then it switches gears with a melodic instrumental section. “Abyssal Depths” is slow enough to be boring, but it’s an outlier. The album sounds like it’ll play much better live while you’re swinging your fists and hitting your friends. I still recommend checking it out.
Make Them Suffer are truly incredible songwriters and “Fireworks” proves that point. The song, off the band’s new record Worlds Apart which comes out July 28 on Rise Records, masterfully blends heavy vocals and eerie guitars with beautiful melodies. This leads to a sense of calm and acceptance while at the same time revealing a type of suffering.

If you’re looking for some new punk jams with strong female vocals, it’s time you check out The Nearly Deads. The Nashville band recently released a new six song EP, Revenge! Of The Nearly Deads, and it sounds exactly like the album cover looks. It mixes the dark edge of destruction with a little bit of fun. It wouldn’t be a surprise to find one of these songs on the radio, but they certainly don’t leave out the beloved bite of punk rock. This EP is where self-empowerment meets wrath, and you’ve got to give it a spin.

American Standards usually center their records around social commentary, and while there is still a healthy amount of that on the Arizona band’s new record Anti-Melody, they’ve also endeavored to try something completely new for them. As tragedy after tragedy befell the band members during the writing process of this record, they realized that they couldn’t put out an honest album without being open about their personal experiences.
